Your Garmin eTrex Legend GPS is a great business tool because it guides you to your destination whether you're driving on the road, hiking in the forest or fishing on the lake. If the eTrex Legend stops picking up a satellite signal or the device won't respond to input, perform a master reset. A master reset erases all data on your eTrex Legend, including user settings, geocaches, routes and waypoints.
1.
Hold down the 'Power' button on the side of the eTrex Legend to turn off the device.
2.
Press and hold the 'Power,' 'Enter' and 'Page' buttons together. If your device has a joystick, it serves as the 'Enter' button when pressed.
3.
Let go of all buttons when the message 'Do you really want to erase all user data?' appears on the screen.
4.
Highlight and select 'Yes' to perform a master reset. This usually takes several minutes to complete.
5.
Put the eTrex Legend outside where it has a clear view of the sky for at least 20 minutes. This allows the device to pick up a satellite signal.
Tip
Performing a master reset deletes all data on the device. Garmin recommends that you back up your data with the Trip and Waypoint Manager included with the device. If you don't have this program and don't want to buy it, you can also perform a backup with the free BaseCamp program available on Garmin's website.

Perform a soft reset on your Garmin Forerunner 305 if you can't turn it on or if it doesn't charge properly. A soft reset does not erase any data from your device. If your GPS unit can't connect to satellites, can't pair with other devices or isn't functioning properly, perform a hard reset to fix the problem. A hard reset erases all the data on your Garmin unit, including settings, workouts and courses.
Perform a Soft Reset
Connect the Garmin Forerunner 305 to your computer using the cable that shipped with the device. Hold the 'Mode' and 'Lap/Reset' buttons for 10 seconds and then turn on the GPS unit. Download and install the Garmin WebUpdater application (link in Resources) and follow the instructions to update the firmware of the Forerunner. Disconnect the device from your computer after updating the firmware.
Perform a Hard Reset
Turn off the Forerunner 305 unit, if it's not already turned off, and then hold the 'Mode' and 'Power' buttons until the 'Do you really want to erase all user data' message appears. Select 'Yes' only if you are certain you want to perform the hard reset. All settings and user data are erased from the device during the reset. The device is reset to factory defaults, so you must leave it outside for at least 15 minutes to reacquire satellite data.
